I'm Larry Masit. Our show is...

My name is Soledad.

Soledad means daughter of the son.

I was born in 1929, and I'm 83 this year and I was born on the edge of Death Valley in a little village of

Muscularo-pathe Indians that are all gone now.

When I first met Soledad, she was living alone in a tiny room and a kind of depressing subsidized

income apartment complex in Florida. She was not depressing though. A few minutes after we met, she

shoved me a little knife she carries in her buckskin pouch.

A sully dot I said that's kind of a dangerous knife, isn't it?

Meaning dangerous for a little lady.

She just laughed.

Yeah, it's sharp, she said. but it would be better if it was rusty. So the cut

would get infected when I stabbed somebody.

Well, when they get your face and call your names, you can only take it so long and then I fight back. My mother was going to have me and she was going to another village and my father and my mother were walking and she started having pains and he helped her get me

Honda Boulder in the shade and I gave her turquoise stone to hold in her mouth to ease the pain and he wetted her lips and he held her hand and he told her everything was going to be all right.

And, uh... And I was born and then there was a jeep came along and there was a

jeep came along and there was full of guys that were drinking and they had guns and they chased my mother and father down and they shot my father in the back and they destroyed my mother put me under

and my mother put me under a mosquito

before they killed her.
