Hey Deservo River listeners, today I'm going to answer patron emails.

0:03.6

This first email is from Torin, they write,

0:06.9

in the new trailer from The Invisible Man movie,

0:10.3

there is a line where they describe the villain. They say he is a sociopath. I'm not sure if you

0:17.0

already talked about this or not, but why is the word sociopath still being used?

0:21.6

From my understanding it is not in the DSM. If possible

0:25.9

could you talk about what people mean when they use the term sociopath? In my

0:30.8

undergraduate degree we were taught that essentially there was a difference between

0:35.1

0:43.7

1:17.0

or I define hydrogen as having two protons or something.

1:21.0

No one does that. There's an agreement of language that is extremely

1:24.7

precise and anyone who steps outside of that is probably ashamed or ridiculed or run out of the

1:30.5

whole system. In psychology it's different because our quote-unquote science is imprecise.

1:38.8

What do we mean by psychopathy? What do we mean by sociopathy? What do we mean by anything we're referring to?

1:44.5

Well, we're usually talking about like a set of,

1:46.9

you know, behaviors that are observed by a subjective observer who will, according to their opinion, apply some label.
