Summary

And now for the big question. How do you find paid work as a photographer. This is the mother of all questions. Everyone who’s ever enjoyed taking pictures has probably asked this at some point. We all know that photography is a tough business. Its brutal. But its not impossible. My answer is likely not what you expect. We have to face a few harsh realities, but in the end I do want to offer some positive suggestions and I’ll do that in this video. You haven't yet addressed the burning question though. How do you get work? I currently work a

0:14.1

day job that pays the bills but I would rather be doing what I'm passionate about.

0:17.4

I know the pro market is competitive but it can't be impossible to break into. I've

0:46.0

what we talk about today and some of it is not easy to hear but at the same time I

0:49.7

do want to be encouraging as well so hang with me a little bit as I try to go through this. I also want to give

0:54.8

a disclaimer up front. I make my living doing this show so I don't make my living right now as a

0:59.3

photographer in the traditional sense of clients and service-based relationships.

1:03.3

I have done freelance work before.

1:04.9

It's been a while.

1:05.6

I did that for about seven years.

1:07.1

And then I left, after doing seven years,

1:09.4

I started working at the Dallas Museum of Art,

1:11.6

and I was there full-time for the next seven years and I

1:14.0

was head of digital media which included doing both photography and video and I

1:18.3

had an in-house job as typically what we call that and I left that in July of last year to do this show full time and that's where I am today.
