Morning everybody. Welcome to your free podcast. It's the 12th of January. The scenario yesterday, because that's why there was nothing carried on my program about David Bowie, and yet he had died when we finished the show, was that we came off air and I went

0:24.1

out of here, I went into the newsroom, and Chris Gold said to me, said, oh, I said, what are you doing?

0:29.3

He said, oh, there's a rumour. He said on the internet that David Bowies died. I said,

0:33.7

to be so silly. Don't be so ridiculous. And then on the news desk, there was a flurry of activities.

0:38.4

People are trying to check with people in America.

0:41.4

And it looked likely that he actually had died.

0:45.5

So I then tweeted, strong rumours on the internet that David Bowie has died, checking now.

0:52.2

And I left here, put my coat on, left here, went to go and get a bus,

0:56.8

and my producer, Chris, came over the road because we get the same bus. Well, I get off before him.

1:03.2

He goes all the way to Penge, I believe. And I said about David Bowie, said it's been confirmed.

1:09.1

I said, you're joking. I said, I'm glad I heard on the side of caution because I mean lots of rumours about David Bowie's death

1:14.6

over the years. He'd had his heart attacks and he'd had his health scares

1:18.6

and I think at one point he had angina so he'd had heart problems and everything else.

1:24.6

But he lived life to the fall to the excess.

1:26.6

He really did. He did the drugs.

1:29.1

He did the cigarettes. He did the sex. And he turned out some brilliant music. Like all creative

1:34.3

people, there has to be a downside. And the downside is that he's dead at the age of 69. The other

1:41.2

downside is I'm kind of heading in that direction myself, feeling kind of vulnerable at the moment, thinking, oh Lord, I said that to a friend of mine the other day. She said, I'm so stupid. I said, well, listen, you don't know, do you? You don't know when you're going to get your calling. I hope they talk about me as much as they talk about him. Anyway, so that dominated all the papers because there was nothing in yesterday's papers, apart from, I think, in the standard later on, it now dominates the papers for today.

2:06.8

And every expert, every person who thinks they're an expert, every person who met him, every person who pretended they met him, every person who claimed that they knew him very well, turned up on the television on the radio, and they all did their stories.

2:17.0

But the true people, the people that really, the people that really matter, were you, the

2:22.4

fans. You were the people who bought the records. You know, the people who were talking about
