Summary
Vitamin A is often one of the less-discussed micronutrients in relation to bone health, taking a back seat to nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. Yet this fat-soluble vitamin plays a fundamental role in skeletal development, remodeling, and mineral homeostasis. It influences gene expression in both osteoblasts and osteoclasts, and contributes to the regulation of bone turnover throughout the lifespan.
But what makes vitamin A particularly interesting, and controversial, is that its effects on bone appear to follow a double-edged pattern. While it's essential for bone formation, several large epidemiological studies have suggested that chronically high intakes of preformed vitamin A may actually increase the risk of osteoporosis and fracture, especially when consumed as retinol from supplements or high-liver diets. And yet, the picture is not so clear-cut.
This raises compelling questions:
- Is the concern over vitamin A and bone health justified, or is it a case of context-dependent risk?
- Can vitamin A, when combined with adequate levels of D and K, actually support bone strength?
- And are there thresholds above or below which risk increases?
In this episode, we explore the human evidence on vitamin A and skeletal health, looking not only at fracture outcomes and bone mineral density data, but also at nutrient interactions, mechanistic plausibility, and the implications for supplement use in well-nourished populations.
Note: This is a Premium-exclusive episode, so you will only hear a preview on this public feed.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to Sigmundrition Radio. My name is Danny Lennon and you are listening to one of our |
| 0:19.7 | premium exclusive episodes of the podcast. |
| 0:23.1 | Today I wanted to tackle the potential impact of vitamin A on bone health, a topic that has |
| 0:29.3 | generated quiet but persistent interest in a nutrition science world for quite a while. |
| 0:35.1 | And so while vitamin A is probably best known for its role in things like |
| 0:39.0 | vision or perhaps immune function, it also plays a crucial role in skeletal development and |
| 0:45.1 | bone remodeling. And so intriguingly, it's not just about avoiding outright deficiency here. Some |
| 0:52.3 | research has raised concerns that excessive intake of vitamin A, |
| 0:56.8 | particularly in the form of retinol that we'll look at a bit later on, may contribute to |
| 1:02.1 | things like reduced bone mineral density, increased fracture risk, and obviously this lays |
| 1:07.3 | the ground for things like osteoporosis. But as with many topics in nutrition, |
| 1:13.1 | this isn't a one-sided story. And indeed, off the back of a previous episode of the podcast |
| 1:19.3 | that we did specifically on bone health and nutrients, that was episode 411. Alan and I talked about |
| 1:25.7 | bone health and nutrients in general. And within that episode, |
| 1:28.9 | we focused on things like vitamin D and calcium and vitamin K. But as one of our listeners, |
| 1:35.5 | Jack Hughes, so thank you for pointing this out, off the back of that episode had posed, |
| 1:39.8 | that there is this hypothesized benefit of preformed vitamin A for bone health, |
| 1:45.9 | an idea that has been pushed forward by Dr. Walter Willett as an example, |
| 1:49.7 | and maybe I'll mention some of his ideas around this. |
| 1:52.6 | And so there's this evidence that preformed vitamin A, |
| 1:57.1 | when present in appropriate amounts, |
| 1:59.1 | can work synergistically with some of these other nutrients, |
