Summary

SNEAK PEEK: In this clip, Danny Dyer joins the lads to break down his latest film role, where he plays a desperate football agent fighting to keep his career alive.

Danny explains how his new film explored the darker side of the football agent world — the ruthless negotiations, the lack of loyalty in the game, and the pressure that comes with chasing the next big deal.

He lifts the lid on the character he plays: a man fresh out of rehab, clinging onto his final client while his life slowly unravels over the course of a tense, one-room drama shot in Dublin. Danny also reflects on the craft of acting after more than three decades in the industry, addressing the perception that he “just plays himself” and why, for him, the real measure of an actor is simple — getting hired and delivering the job.

From the brutal realities of football agents to the challenge of carrying an entire film largely alone on screen, Danny reveals why this role pushed him in ways he hadn’t experienced before — and why it might be one of the performances he’s most proud of.

0:03.0

Right.

0:04.0

Talk us through that.

0:05.0

You're playing a football agent.

0:06.0

And the way you're playing this football agent is, it reminds me of a lot of agents that I've been around.

0:13.0

Well, I think they've run the game now, agents, don't they?

0:17.0

They're such a powerful force.

0:20.0

And there's an argument to say not very nice people

0:24.0

I mean agents are there to look after their client and their client only so they never really

0:27.8

have an affiliation with the club they're playing for and you feel like contracts it doesn't

0:32.4

mean fuck all now you sign a six year contract it's like well if the player gets the um it'll go

0:37.0

anyway um so I suppose really, it's, the point in the film is I'm the only one in it. So this is why I was attracted to it because I thought, I got sent it. It was 120 pages. It's just me in a fucking room on my own. I thought, and I read it and I thought it's just so good.

0:55.1

It's like this Gijer is the worst day of his life, right? And he's, you know, he's been a snake throughout, you know, it's all starting to come back to him a little bit now. So I read it and thought, I love it. And then I thought, can I fucking do it? And I think the only reason I'm going to know if I say yes.

1:09.9

So we shot it 10 days straight in Dublin.

1:13.5

And it's just me in a room. It's like an episode of Twilight Zone. He just has the worst day of his life. And he's just out of rehab. So he's lost a lot of clients because of it's got one client left. And this one client is like, Harry Kay he's the best player, he's the top scorer in the league, right?

1:30.6

It just happens to be, it's quite relevant as well, that on the same day, this player has got a cult case, he's got a trial for rape.

1:41.4

Now, my character, who don't care about all that, who sort of tampered with the evidence and stuff like that, he just got to get him his five-year deal and get him as much red as he can and pray that obviously the trial can, and he gets off. Right? So, again, no morals, this man. But it's really clever to way it pans out. And I want to give too much away but I had to keep it

2:01.8

interesting hold the screen for an hour and half every character's in it's on the end of a

2:05.9

blower so it's my job to make them sort of feel alive as well so they cast other people

2:12.7

when we did it on the day I came in I turned up put me little earpiece in because obviously

2:16.4

when you're on the phone you have an earpiece so that you can hear the other actor. Never met the other actors

2:20.5

that were doing it. They was in a tent somewhere. Come in, get me a bit of clobber on, I'm going, hello, baby, getting on, yeah, lovely. Would you have a breakfast? And I like, small talk. and then we start acting
