We got a lot to get into today because, yes, snap is broken, but your bank might be, too.

I don't know if people are aware of what's happening with our banking industry right now.

I want to talk about this a little bit because we're in a situation where, quite frankly,

the runs on banks are something we have not seen in a very long time, but this feels particularly pertinent because

just this weekend when I was talking with our dear friends in Tucson, Arizona at the NAACP

Tucson Branch's Freedom Fund, one of the things I talked about extensively was the Great Depression,

which was triggered by the stock market crash of 1929. You might be thinking, why does this matter?

We're supposed to be talking about Snap. Yes, we all going to talk about snap. But y'all remember when Muhammad Ali would yell out the champ is here. It was like this bold declaration that he, the champion, would not be denied. His presence was extraordinarily bold. He was extraordinarily unapologetic and undeniably aggressive. And when he would run around yelling the champ is here, it was a signal that what you're going to do is deal with me. I am now in the room. You're going to have to handle me. Well, friends, guess what? Recession is here. Yeah, I said recession because while Americans are now officially more hungry because the Republicans broke snap and told Democrats, hey, man, you're either going to let us cancel people's health care or you're going to let us cancel their food. You get to choose, but we ain't doing nothing with this government coming back open unless we get to either cancel one or the other. Health care or food, you pick which one. And if you don't choose, the government will just stay closed. This is important because as we learned last night on the win with black women call from economist extraordinaire, Dr. Suzanne Malvo, she pointed out that there are already 22 states

in these United States whose economies meet the definition of recession, which she defines,

or she shared the definition with us, which was two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.

And there are 22 states in the union that currently meet that definition today.

Now, just when

American generosity a mutual aid was beginning to be a thing and we're talking now

about snap benefits because we're gonna talk about why your bank is broken asking

for payday loans from the Federal Reserve in just a minute but just when

American generosity and mutual aid was becoming a thing the US Department of

Agriculture told grocery stores who are willing to donate food,

what you can't do is that. What you cannot do is that. And this is significant because as we learn

from Catherine Rampel, who was an MSNBC anchor and a co-host of the weekend, she herself is an

economist and she has written extensively about economic issues, we learned over the weekend that the

U.S. Department of Agriculture told grocery stores who were willing to donate food to SNAP recipients because grocery stores
