Our first question comes from Margot, who asks, how do rattlesnakes rattle their tails?

That is a great question, Margo. The first cool thing to know is rattle snakes don't shake their tails against something to make that sound. Nope, the rattle is built right into the tail. At the end of a rattlesnake's tail are a bunch of hollow, dry segments made of keratin,

the same material your fingernails are made of. Every time the snake sheds its skin,

it adds a new segment to its rattle. When the snake vibrates its tail super fast, sometimes up to

90 times per second, those segments bump into each other and create that buzzing rattling sound.

And here is an extra cool fact. Rattlesnakes don't use their rattle to attack. They use it as a warning.
