Summary

Nate and Danny discuss why their definition of a small forward might differ from some others’, and then rank all the heavy hitters at the position.  Where do big stars like LeBron, KD, Luka, Cade, Tatum, and Brown rank?  How about up-and-comers like Brandon Miller and Deni Avdija? What do we make of lower-level scorers like Brandon Ingram compared to three-and-D stalwarts like OG Anunoby?

All right, welcome on to the second position in our position rankings and the one that's always most controversial in a number of facets.

0:09.2

So we're going to talk about small forwards today, Danny.

0:11.7

And we get a lot of guff on this.

0:14.1

We've never discussed this as well since I've always kind of been the arbiter of who's going to be a small forward and power forward and all that.

0:24.8

But what is it that makes a small forward to you?

0:29.7

And why are some of these guys, Kate Cunningham, Luke Kodontich, you know, that are people try to say are point guards, whatever, why are they small forwards in our rankings?

0:33.8

Do you think that is defensible?

0:35.2

I think it's defensible.

0:39.9

And for me, positions are entirely defined defensively because an offensive role can vary so much, thankfully, in the

0:45.7

modern NBA. You have bigs who handle the ball like Nicolio Yokic and Alperin Schengun. You have

0:51.1

smalls that don't. You have guys who are point guard sized. And so to me, what a small forward is. And so there are a few, you know, like, I think it's useful to have, like, you're the arbiter of positions and I'm not because otherwise we would have arguments about that. And we have enough discussions to have in terms of the actual rankings as well. And so I think that for me, positions are it's who you defend. And so like, yeah,

1:11.9

you can make an argument that I see Luca, you know, defensively as a four, but the, the lines

1:17.1

between it. So like a three, we said, I said when we did shooting guards that to me, shooting

1:22.8

guards are players who can't defend small forwards, like, or on ball stuff can be a little bit

1:27.4

different. But like, they can't really defend small forwards. And that's why small forwards are one of the most valuable positions. And then in some ways, power forwards are guys that can't really defend fours and or that can't defend fives and can't defend threes. And so that means small forward is a narrower group because there are fewer people that can do this and do it at least capably. And so it's that. And then one of the things that makes small forward so different is that,

1:49.4

okay, so that's a, it's a just the defensive part of it is narrow enough. But then you add in

1:55.8

the variability of what you're asking for, what you could theoretically get from people who are

2:00.7

small forward sized. And then that's where a lot of the value differentiation asking for, what you could theoretically get from people who are small

2:01.0

forward sized, and then that's where a lot of the value differentiation.

2:04.7

Yeah, a lot of it just goes down to the size of the player.

2:08.0

You know, if you're 6-7, around 6-7, you're around, you know, 22 pounds.

2:13.3

You're probably going to be a small forward.
