Monday afternoons are always slow in my office,

but this one was as slow as a tourist driving on an open road, going nowhere in particular and taking his sweet time about it.

I was in my usual work position, feet up on my desk, leaning back in the chair, examining the back of my eyelids for thin spots.

Life is a private eye is boring at times, but I do get my beauty rest. I was catching a little cat nap waiting for a client with a little problem and a lot of money.

My name is Slick Bracer, Private Eye.

This Monday afternoon was just like any other Monday afternoon.

It was hot as the top of a tin roof in July, and I was the cat.

"'The air conditioner was on the fritz again,

"'and my secretary Mildred was out in the front office doing some filing.

"'Her nails.

"'And when she was finished with that, all eleven toes,

"'the front door slammed and slapped me out of a dreamless sleep

like a bratwurst out of a tailpipe. It was either a client or a bill collector. I hoped there was

a client because I was all out of guys named Bill. I jumped out of my chair, yanked on my coat,

and put my hat back on, all in one smooth motion. I opened the door to the front office and got a good look at my client.

She was a tall, blonde woman, which is why I used the pronoun she to begin with.

Seeing her tight skirt, hat, and that little furry scarf thingy she had around her neck,
