boxes stacked high, her very own room. The walls were a pale yellow, her mother's attempt to make

it cheerful. But when the lights went out, the color vanished, swallowed whole by the kind of

dark that hums.

It always began the same way.

She'd wake up, not from a dream, but from something.

A pull in her stomach, a whisper, her mind couldn't catch.

Then the bed would start to shake.

Not a little, not the way a truck passing down the street makes things rattle.

This was deliberate, violent for a few seconds, then perfectly still. She told herself it had to be a dream. She was four. Everything
