Today we're wondering a wee bit outside our usual subject matter, because we've come across something that we think is not just very interesting, but also highly relevant to the Scottish countryside, and arguably how it looks today.

Yeah, when people around the world think of Scotland, they tend to think of heather-clad moors, locks and glens, deer in the glens, grouse and the high tops, all that kind of thing. And a lot of Scotland does look like that because a big percentage of our land is still made up of big estates, many of which are run for sporting purposes. But the interesting question is how did these estates come into being?
