Hello and welcome to the Slate Political Gap Fest for the 24th of September.

I'm John Dickerson with David Plotz.

Emily Bazelon is in her usual chair in New Haven.

And we're in Washington, of course.

And today we're going to talk about the GOP pledge for America, which was announced Thursday of this week in a lumber warehouse out in the suburbs of Virginia, not in Washington. It doesn't come from Washington. It comes from the suburbs of Virginia.

And then we're also going to talk about my trip to Ohio and what I saw there, the key state of Ohio.

Another place that is not Washington.

It is so not Washington.

And then we're going to talk about the March on Washington by Stephen Colbert and John Stewart and what that may or may not mean for the elections.

And then we're going to finish by talking about Bob Woodward's new book called Obama's Wars.

That book started leaking this week in Stories in the Times and then the actual excerpts from it.

I don't know.

Maybe they haven't appeared yet.

Well, anyway, stories about it appeared in the Post.

And there's been a lot of talk about the focus of that book, which is the president's decision to send more troops to Afghanistan and the internal battles

that went on in the administration and that continue to go on to this day.

And then we'll have cocktail chatter and then we'll all go home and take a nap.

David, I'm going to ask Emily, her reaction first, to the GOP pledge.

This is a set of proposals. The Republicans in the House have put forward kind of matching or echoing the contract with America from the 1994 election.

And this is the agenda for the Republican Party.
