| 0:00.0 | Hello, I'm Cleo Levin, one of the editors bringing members exclusive Slate Plus content. |
| 0:07.6 | I recently spoke with host Josh Levine and senior producer Evan Trung about making this |
| 0:11.8 | season of one year. |
| 0:12.8 | Here's a snippet from our conversation. |
| 0:14.8 | Well, this is good material for Plus is that the Russian reporter, Yonet Andrana, who |
| 0:19.4 | shows up in The Man from Fifth Avenue episode, that this was not the first time we had |
| 0:24.6 | encountered him in our research. |
| 0:26.7 | So our first season on 1977, I think you had pitched this idea, Evan, right? |
| 0:32.1 | Yeah, I'm trying to remember all the details, but there was a small town in West Virginia, |
| 0:36.5 | I believe, in 1977, with kind of this isolated community where there was one bridge, I think |
| 0:41.9 | that connected them to the rest of the state or something, very poor community, and this |
| 0:46.4 | bridge had fallen into disrepair or maybe collapsed, and they couldn't get any funding |
| 0:52.5 | to replace it. |
| 0:53.8 | And so as kind of a publicity stunt, the mayor of this tiny town appealed to the Soviet |
| 0:59.3 | Union, asking them to come in and fix their bridge. |
| 1:03.2 | And this one person who heard that plea was the same Russian reporter, Yonet Andranav, |
| 1:09.6 | who went down to West Virginia and covered it and turned it into this whole media spectacle, |
| 1:15.0 | that kind of embarrassed. |
| 1:16.0 | I think the local authorities from the state of West Virginia, and I think they ultimately |
| 1:19.7 | got their bridge, not from the Soviet Union, but they got their bridge from whenever local |
| 1:24.8 | government funding there was. |
| 1:28.4 | Slate plus members have access to this full conversation. |
