June 19th. And whenever it's June 19th, and I know that it's June 19th,

it brings back the memory of one thing. I and many others remember what happened on June 19th,

1983 years ago today. It was Len Bias's death from cocaine intoxication. It was one of the saddest days I can ever remember,

and it was the most impactful athlete death of my lifetime, I believe. It came two nights

after he was selected by the Celtics at number two overall in the NBA draft, and Len Bias,

the death was as much because of what he looked like as what he was on the

basketball court.

He was a strapping 6-8 specimen of a human being.

Anyone that saw him play, you were struck by the body that he had. He was chiseled from stone. He appeared

to be unbreakable. And it was that as much as it was, again, the greatness that he was as a basketball

player that he had as a basketball player on the court. It was the look of him, the physical freak

that he was that made his death at 22 years old. So shocking. How could somebody that looked

like Len Byest die from cocaine use? Remember, it was the height of the 80s. It was the height

of cocaine being everywhere. I went to Maryland. I was on that campus. I was in

bars. I was at parties, dorm rooms, apartments around campus. It was everywhere. Even if you didn't use it,

it was everywhere. Len Baez died from it. Him. It wasn't possible.

It didn't seem possible.

His shocking death and everything that happened as a result of his death, it's hard to forget.
