On this special episode of Skimm This, we wanted to take a break from the news for some comic relief, and get a chance to hear some of your voices. A few weeks ago, we asked you to fill out a survey about how the past year has been. The good, the bad, and the ugly. And we started getting a lot of must-read responses to one question in particular: what was your best or worst pandemic purchase? First up: A wannabe survivalist builds out his basement to store lots and lots of powdered milk. We decided to check in with him...and his wife. Then: We heard about some toys for kids that didn’t exactly come as advertised. Next: Millennials are becoming farmers, with new chicken coops and garden boxes sparking joy. Later: Some purchases ended up being some serious silver linings. Looking at you, new mattress and blow-up swimming pool. And other pandemic buys became new hobbies that are hopefully sticking with us post-COVID. 0:00.0	March 2nd. Yep. Look at that. Do you remember where you were? Yeah, I was on a work trip when that was a thing.
0:07.4	That's Luke, the senior producer of Schemeless and his wife Chelsea.
0:11.4	I think you'd been overseas for like a week and we've been running a lot of episodes of Schemeless that were about COVID and I was like,
0:19.0	Hey, boo, I think it's time to come home. You're not convinced.
0:24.0	I don't think I had a sense of how much the world was going to change.
0:28.1	So I kind of took matters into my own hands and I guess on this day, I texted you a photo pretty nervously and it was like,
0:35.4	Hey, I just spent like $300 on this thing.
0:38.8	I thought you were a survivalist.
0:41.7	Luke, like a lot of other wannabe survivalists hit at a cart on something he'd never think of buying in the before times.
0:48.6	A chest freezer.
0:51.1	Then it's like I'm on MTV grips.
0:52.9	This is where the food preservation magic happens. Lots of frozen meat, frozen fish, veggies, fruit over here for fruit for smoothies, lots of cauliflower and yoke butter.
1:07.7	It's kind of like a frozen kitchen pantry.
1:10.4	And then it was like, why stop there?
1:12.7	Trip to Home Depot, let's buy shelves.
1:15.6	We're having a bunker style food pantry in the basement now.
1:19.0	Now a year later, Luke says the chest freezer saved a lot of trips to the grocery store when the pandemic was really bad.
1:26.0	Even if a few things on the shelf are still collecting dust.
1:30.0	We still have about a year's worth of granola and dried nuts to work.
1:34.4	Oh, also powdered milk.
1:38.6	Luckily, it never came to putting that to you.
1:42.2	If you can't tell, we're doing something a little different today.
