Sometimes scientists might publish something that's speculative or preliminary, but the

press gets a hold of it and trumpets it across the world like it's the newest proven thing.

Even before the scientists get to really settle their question, this is not too far from

what happened in 1983 when Carl Sagan and others wrote that nuclear war would cause

a devastating nuclear winter.
