Summary

Stephan van der Zwaard, PhD, is an assistant professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam as well as a data scientist at Leiden University. With his background in both sports science and exercise physiology as well as data science, Stephan is able to work at the intersection of these fields to provide unique perspectives both in academia and applied sports such as cycling and speed skating. Today we discuss one of Stephan's most recent papers, titled "Under the hood: Skeletal muscle determinants of endurance performance".     IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: -A summary of VO2max, lactate threshold, and exercise economy (whole body-determinants of endurance performance) -A deep dive into skeletal muscle determinants of endurance performance (including muscle fiber type, mitochondrial oxidative capacity, capillarisation, myoglobin and others) -Different training types and training intensities (e.g. low intensity, moderate intensity, high intensity, sprint interval training etc), and how they might impact the skeletal determinants of endurance performance -Why the polarised training model tends to work so well for endurance athletes   SHOWNOTES: https://scientifictriathlon.com/tts313/   SCIENTIFIC TRIATHLON AND THAT TRIATHLON SHOW WEBPAGE: www.scientifictriathlon.com/podcast/   SPONSORS: ROKA - Exceptional quality triathlon wetsuits, trisuits, swimskins, goggles, performance sunglasses as well as prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses.  Online vision test for prescription updates and home try-on options available for eyeglasses. The podcast presented by Scientific Traathlon.com.

0:26.8

I'm our host Michael and on today's episode I interviewed Dr. Stefan van der Svard.

0:30.8

Stefan's area of expertise spans both exercise science and physiology as well as data science

0:36.1

so he can work at the intersection of

0:39.2

those different areas which is something we'll go into a little bit but the first the main thing

0:44.1

we'll discuss is one of stephan's most recent papers which is definitely on the physiology side

0:49.7

of things it's called under the hood skeletal muscle determinants Muzzle Derminance of Endurance Performance.

0:58.9

So we'll go into what these skeletal muscle determinants of endurance performance really are.

1:02.4

Before we get into that, big thanks to our sponsors, Roka.

1:06.8

Roka produced exceptional quality triathlon wetsuits, trisuits, swimskins, goggles,

1:09.9

perform sunglasses as well as prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses.

1:11.3

If you want to go faster in the water or on the bike, a Roka wetsuit or trisuit might be for you, or if you just

1:16.2

want to have a more comfortable, functional and stylish pair of eyeglasses, then look to their

1:20.8

range of eyewear. Today I want to highlight Roka's sim shorts, which are neoprene shorts that

1:26.2

add buoyancy in the pool.

1:28.1

This has several benefits in that it allows you to train the specific body position of

1:32.0

swimming in a wetsuit without having to actually bring the wetsuit to the pool.

1:35.9

It allows you to learn and understand good body positioning, if that's something that you

1:40.7

struggle with, and it can help you add more swimming volume, in particular when your legs are tired and sinky from bike and run training.

1:47.8

And it can help you better work on other points for improvement in your stroke than just body position,
