We're kicking off Season 5 as we await the beginning of Season 20! And the Browns are making big moves to buy some very big houses.
However, the ghost of Robyn's past (debt) is a major issue and the way she chooses to communicatively frame it is one of the most controversial points in the history of the show. So of course I have some things to say.

0:32.4 | I'm going to... Hello there and welcome, as always, to the Sister Wives Professor. |
0:40.0 | That is me. I am Dr. Adam. I am a professor of communication and a very long time follower of the TLC series Sister Wives. Before we get into anything, well Gretchen is here. Hi, Kitty. Hi Kitty. I don't |
0:47.3 | if you can hear her. Christine's book is out. Christine's book is out. It's been out for a minute. |
0:52.2 | I have read it. I got a lot of thoughts. I'm going to talk |
0:55.0 | about those thoughts on the podcast, but not this week. So I'm actually going to specifically avoid spoilers because I do know I've got a lot of listeners that haven't read the book yet, that want to, that are waiting for a library copy or whatever. So if you're worried about spoilers, you don't need to be worried about that this week. But also, if you've read the book and you're wondering, why isn't he referencing when Cody did this or Christine said that, that'll probably start next week. I hope that's fair. That's like the best compromise that I can come up with. And I'm really excited to talk to you. And this is one of those big days for me where we are starting a brand new season in terms of our recaps or rewatches, whatever it is we're doing, starting season five. |
1:29.9 | Episode one, polygamist debt threat is the title, which is a pretty good name. |
1:34.6 | Kind of like the sound of that. |
1:36.0 | I don't know, it just sounds good. |
1:37.3 | Not the debt sounds good, and we're going to find out all about debt, and we're going to talk |
1:40.9 | all about debt in this episode and lots of other things. |
1:44.6 | As a quick reminder, I do have the most recent sister wives deep dive called Janelle, |
1:49.3 | actually, where I talk about Tata Farms, Plexus, marrying Cody, divorcing Cody, and more. |
1:55.4 | All about Janelle's life and putting that through the lens of looking at Maslow's hierarchy of needs, particularly |
2:02.2 | the top of the pyramid, which is actualization, trying to become the version of ourselves we |
2:07.2 | most want to be. That is new on Patreon and for subscribers through Apple to the Faculty Lounge. |
2:13.1 | In case you missed it, it's one of my favorite ones I've ever done. And also for subscribers of the faculty lounge and any patron at the $8 tier and up, keep an eye out for |
2:22.9 | Dr. Amanda and I, my wife, our recap of sister wife, Christine's new book. And also we're |
2:28.5 | going to talk about meeting Christine Brown, which we did recently at her, one of her book |
2:32.6 | signings, which was pretty surreal. So we're going to talk all about that as well. Like I said, keep an eye out for that if you're interested. That's all, though. Usually I mention that stuff at the beginning and I forgot to. So just in case, because some people skip the end with the affirmational stuff because it's just not relevant, which is totally fair, by the way. So I just want to mention it one more time. Let's get to the episode, okay? You know me, I don't like to do too much preamble. I really do try to keep it, keep it light, so let's talk about season five, episode one, polygamist, debt threat. And we're in Vegas, of course, Cody's talking about the move from Utah and how they couldn't find one giant home from themselves. And Janelle, too, recaps that the older teenagers were very upset about the move. |
3:11.9 | And we see the dreaded living room conversation where a lot of the kids, Leon especially was crying, |
