Summary

Ok, so we've done a bunch of philosophizing about whether or not we live in a simulation, but what about the physics and computing involved? Dr. Bryan Gillis takes us through what it might actually take to simulate our whole universe. Spoiler... it would not be easy. Find out why!

Thomas Smith and we are back at it with the simulation stuff but now we're

0:25.2

moving to a really fascinating area of it which is Dr Brian Gillis taking us

0:30.0

through what would it actually take to simulate the universe?

0:34.0

That's sort of a given of some of these arguments.

0:36.0

Oh yeah, you know, we have video games now and we have 3D stuff and we have virtual reality and so

0:40.8

you know, hop skibbing a jump to simulating our entire

0:44.8

universe in a way that would be convincing to us. What does that, uh, what would that

0:49.1

actually take? Maybe it's easy, maybe it's not easy. Dr Brian Gillis is going to take us through the physics and sort of the computing limits and stuff

0:58.2

that would go into figuring out how plausible this is.

1:00.9

And I want to add, Brian did a lot of work on this, a lot of original work on this in trying to calculate this. So I hope you will stay tuned and listen for that really fascinating look into what it would take to simulate the universe.

1:15.3

So you want to simulate the universe, do you?

1:18.3

Well, find out what that would take after this auto ad that you can of course skip if you are patron at patreon

happen and with that let's figure out how we're going to hack the mainframe here and simulate our entire universe.

1:35.5

Dr. Bryan Gillis, how you doing today?

1:38.0

Hi, well, not so well. I'm unfortunately down with COVID here.

1:41.5

I'm sorry to hear that. I think that's the

1:43.3

simulators they're saying where they're punishing you for revealing their

1:46.8

secrets. I think that's what it is. That or somebody found a bug just like back in

1:51.3

World of Warcraft where there was actually accidentally a bug which let loose a pandemic.

1:55.6

Is that real? Yeah, there was. It was quite a while ago. It's called the corrupted blood incident, I think. Basically there was this one boss. the 10 or so people to fight it. And he would unleash a mini pandemic
