Summary

After stalling while the Tory Party considered which unelected Prime Minister was going to lead the country back in 2022, the Online Harms Bill is now back on the agenda in Parliament, rebranded as the Online Safety Bill. In this week’s Chops, Jen catches up with Dr Lisa Sugiura, Reader in Cybercrime and Gender at the University of Portsmouth, to find out why that rebranding might be a problem. They chat about how the online world presents new opportunities for domestic abusers, why the Online Safety Bill isn’t worth the paper it's written on, and why it's not all LOLZ about Andrew Tate's pizza box faux pas. Don’t have nightmares, like. Lisa's book, The Incel Rebellion: The Rise of the Manosphere and the Virtual War Against Women, is available here. Segura, a reader in cybercrime and gender at the University of Portsmouth. I know what you're

0:38.9

thinking. Jesus, age Christ, that could cover a lot of ground. And yes, it does. Listen on for more

0:45.1

about how the online world presents new opportunities for domestic abusers, why the online safety bill

0:50.6

is frankly not worth the paper it's written on, and why it's not all lulls about Andrew Tate's

0:56.1

pizza box faux par. It's a meaty old list, but fortunately, Lisa is excellent, and I think you're

1:02.0

going to find what she has to say to be very interesting indeed. Don't have nightmares lads.

I'm joined by Dr. Lisa Segura, a reader in cybercrime and gender at the University of Portsmouth.

Hello, Lisa. Thanks for joining me today. Thanks for inviting me on. So cybercrime and gender,

1:23.2

well, there's a very specific example that we've just talked about offline and we'll talk about

1:27.6

again in a minute, but so there are possibly some ideas and people's minds at the moment about

1:32.3

that, you know, what that might cover, but I wondered if you could tell me first of all a little

1:36.6

bit about what you do. So yes, as you mentioned, I'm a reader in cybercrime and gender at the

1:42.0

University of Portsmouth. That means I lecture and research and my main sorts of things that I both

1:48.9

teach and study online gender based violence issues. And so really what I'm looking at is how

1:58.2

technology and digital tools in the online sphere is being used to harm women and marginalized

2:05.9

persons and essentially how it is not necessarily creating new behaviors, but it's replicating those

2:14.5

harms that we've always had offline and it's exacerbating as well the sort of inequalities that

2:19.9

we have in our society. I first heard of you a while ago now and some some work that you were
