On May the 25th, Ireland faces a momentous decision.

Is the country going to allow women access to safe and legal abortions for the first time

in its history.

As people prepared to cast their vote in the nationwide referendum, we talked to 14 women

from the fields of law, medicine, academia, politics, education, the arts and

good old-fashioned campaigning about their work to repeal the eighth.

In this first episode we look at the law as it currently stands in Ireland, it's repercussions for women, and we wonder how did we get here?

abortion has been officially illegal in Ireland since 1861, but in 1983 the pro-life

campaign pushed for an amendment to make it nigh on impossible for women to access an abortion

in any circumstances.

A referendum was held and the Eighth Amendment was passed.

I'm a member of Lawyers for Choice. I'm a trainee solicitor. I've been involved in

pro-choice activism since 2013. So at the moment we have Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution, which is more commonly known as the Eighth Amendment,

and it basically puts in place an absolute abortion ban in Ireland.
