Amfit felt connected to the rocks, the worms, the rats, the soil, the lichen,

starshine, and people crying when they thought they were out of view.

A vague, unformed consciousness, drifting out of her and through the Andrahunj,

up through the earthen crust and out into an expanse of sky too big to ever circumnavigate by flight. The beast nipped her hand. The bite didn't puncture the tough fabric of the glove, but it still hurt.

A lot. Consciousness sharpened by a notch. She felt oddly immortal and cramped. Time had compressed

and contorted into lightning flashes. She remembered dreaming about Afton, retaining not the details,

but the immediate feeling of it. He felt happy. He felt free. But part of her, that invulnerable

part, said those were the pitiable thoughts of a bleeding mother and were to be ignored.

There was a gaping wound in her leg that completely saturated her protective clothing.

She wasn't dead, so it hadn't hit an artery. The blood wasn't dry, so she hadn't been out long.

She clumsily wrapped rope around her thighs as tightly as she could to staunch additional bleeding,

then looped and fastened what remained so that she would stay aligned with the hole above her as best she could.

The pack was still down there, along with her killing Adagio, her blood vials, food, medicine, precious small equipment.

But there was also an unseen animal down there, one ready to fight for few rations that wouldn't satisfy it for more than a minute.

She hit the toggle to send the

retraction signal along the length of the rope. The wench did its job, quickly dragging her through

the same sphincter of a tunnel as she came. Yet, by the time she got to the surface, she was laughing. Her spirit absolutely howled
