0:16.0	Welcome to Revelation, friends. Actually, we started the new book yesterday,
0:18.0	and today we're in Chapter 2.
0:20.0	When I tell people we're starting revelation, I get big eyes and oh, as the response.
0:27.3	This book has a reputation for being challenging.
0:30.6	But the good news is we're going into it together and we can learn in layers.
0:35.0	Since God's word is living and active, there's always more for us to know about
0:40.0	God when we approach scripture. This is just one more opportunity to go deeper with
0:45.8	God. Now today we're going to talk about the seven churches, specifically what
0:51.2	Jesus said to the church in Ephesus and how our relationship with Jesus impacts the way we interact with the world.
0:59.0	So first, why is Jesus addressing the seven churches?
1:03.0	Well, by the time revelation was written,
1:06.0	the people of what is now modern day Turkey
1:08.6	had been under Roman rule for almost two centuries.
1:12.2	The Roman system was one that rewarded allegiance
1:15.0	to the emperor through financial and social gain
1:18.1	so that prosperity was tied to those who
1:20.9	had more power and influence than you and work to increase your
1:25.1	allegiance to those people and to the government. The more you did for them, the better
1:29.9	your life was. Now the Pax Romana gave even more advantages like physical
