Summary

Our gut helps fight disease. It processes energy for us and boosts our mood. So, having a healthy gut is extremely important – but there’s still a lot we don’t know. Gut biome tests are a new, exciting technology, but are they the be-all and end-all for dietary decision-making? And are there simpler ways — and tastier ways, perhaps — to tell what’s happening inside our bodies? In today’s short episode of ZOE Science & Nutrition, Jonathan and Dr. Will ask: What are the signs of an unhealthy gut? And how can we improve our gut health? Hello and welcome to Zoe Shorts, the bite-sized podcast where we discuss one

0:05.1

topic around science and nutrition. I'm Jonathan Wolf and I'm joined this

0:09.9

week by Dr. Will Bulsawitch and today we're talking about unhealthy guts.

0:17.1

Jonathan, our guts help fight disease, process energy and boost our mood so

0:22.4

healthy gut is hugely important but there's still a lot we don't know.

0:25.3

Understanding of the gut microbiomes in its early stages. So is it actually

0:29.6

possible for us to spot the signs of an unhealthy gut? Yes it is but it's not

0:35.2

as straightforward as you think and interestingly it involves blue poo.

0:44.0

Well blue is my favorite color. In fact my wife often says that if I would buy

0:48.7

something that wasn't blue she'd be really happy about it and I'm actually

0:52.8

wearing a green top just because I thought we might be talking about blue

0:55.8

today so let's get into it. So Will when we say a healthy gut we could mean a

1:00.7

lot of different things so what do you mean here? First of all a healthy gut

1:05.1

means we have a good balance of microbes otherwise known as bacteria and

1:09.2

yeasts in our gastrointestinal tract. These microbes help our body to take

1:13.7

energy from our food to clear toxins, fight viruses and they help produce the

1:17.7

feel-good hormone serotonin. I mean this is like literally just a minor glimpse

1:21.1

into what they do. They do a lot of great things for us and secondly it means

1:24.6

that we are not suffering from digestive problems that make eating normal

1:28.2

food difficult for us. And so do you feel that the digestive problems

1:32.5

themselves are somehow linked to this sort of poor situation with the microbes?

1:36.8

Absolutely. Now to be clear everyone has occasional digestive symptoms. I mean
