Summary

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer joins Stew to discuss his No. 2 recruiting class. Meyer talked about the high number of early signees who are already practicing with the team and that most of them are already on track to play next season. He also shared the story of Ezekiel Elliot’s early recruiting days, and how he went from being ranked 108th in his class to becoming one of the most explosive running backs in college football.

Stew is joined by Stanford head coach David Shaw (13:00), who talks about the challenge of recruiting players who have to be academically accepted to the school before they sign. Shaw also discussed the smaller amount of scholarships Stanford has work with and the different way of thinking that goes into their recruiting process.

Welcome to the Audible. I'm Stuart Mandel. No Bruce Feldman with us today on signing day. This is the fourth and final episode I'm bringing to you on this very busy signing day of coaches interviews, and we've got, frankly, two of the best in the sport.

0:26.4

I think everybody would agree right here in this last episode.

0:30.2

So first up, I catch up with Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer.

0:33.8

The Buckeyes once again had one of the top recruiting classes in the country.

0:38.2

That seems like an annual thing. But what's interesting about this class is, as we talk about, a lot of great D.Bs,

0:45.9

which is important because Ohio State, believe it or not, has had six D.Bs turned pro

0:49.9

over the last two seasons, three starters from each year. We also talk about a very highly touted quarterback Tate Martel.

0:58.2

And then at the end, I asked him a little bit about Ezekiel Elliott

1:01.2

in the great rookie season he had in the NFL,

1:03.5

and actually Urban kind of tied it all back to recruiting and recruiting rankings,

1:07.9

so that was very timely.

1:09.3

After Irwin, we've got Stanford coach David Shaw.

1:12.1

Now, here's where the recruiting rankings can be a little deceiving.

1:15.2

If you look on the team rankings at the end of the day, you're going to see Stanford ranked

1:18.6

around 14th.

1:20.4

They only signed 14 guys.

1:22.1

Look at the average per player, and I believe only Alabama and Ohio State are higher. They just had a home run year

1:29.7

in terms of getting forced the number one quarterback in the country in Davis Mills, two of the

1:34.6

three best tackles, or as David calls them, the two best tackles, Walker Little and Foster

1:38.7

Seral and the top tight end in Colby Parkinson. So without further ado, let's talk to these coaches.

1:48.2

All right, very excited now to be joined by Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer at the end of another

1:53.0

signing day and another very highly ranked class.
