Good morning. I'm Anna Palmer. And I'm Jake Sherman. And welcome to The Daily Punch, brought to by Punchable News. It's Wednesday, October 1st, 2025. Let's get into the mix. Here are your Washington headlines of the day. Number one, we're in a government shutdown. Now what? Number two, Thune plays hardball and number three, Dems have a rare potential win in the redistricting wars. All right, Jake, let's get to it. We have been foreshadowing and talking about a possible government shutdown, what it would mean. Since March.

I mean, we're a little bit of a broken record, probably more so than most news outlets.

But so officially, the federal government shutdown at 12.01 a.m. this morning, it is the first government shutdown since 2019. I think it's really important to just, like, underscore, right?

Shutdowns are harmful. They're counterproductive, a major detriment to

the country. And the party looking to force a policy change we've seen this time and again via a shutdown

rarely gets what it wants if you go back in history. 2013 to Republicans shut down seeking to

repeal Obamacare. That didn't happen. Democrats, a 2018 shutdown over DACA, that didn't happen.

And the 2018-2019 shutdown, which Republicans tried to secure money for Donald Trump's borderwall, also unsuccessful.

So now we've got hundreds of thousands of federal workers expected to be furloughed.

Huge impact on families nationwide. I don't think we can kind of overstate that.

And we're kind of in a moment where it's unclear how, as easy it is to stumble into a shutdown,

it is very hard to figure out sometimes how to get out of one.

It's really easy to get into one.

But when you get into one, you are by definition taking the maximalist position, which is I will not fund government unless X.

And then you rarely get X.

So when you don't get X, you got to get out.

I mean, the government has to open at some point.
