Summary

Well, the timing could not have been better. George Osborne joins Matt on the day that Theresa May announced that she would resign if her deal passed in the Commons and the night that the Commons held its indicative Brexit votes. George overcomes his grief at the Prime Minister's imminent departure and shares hilarious stories about working for Iain Duncan Smith, facing Gordon Brown for the first time and Russian spying. He also discusses his new role as editor of the Evening Standard, his opposition to the EU referendum and his time as Chancellor as well as, among other things, Love Island. Hello and welcome to the Political Party podcast. This one featuring former

0:04.3

chancellor of the Exchequer, had current editor of the evening standard George

0:08.3

Osborne. And what a day to be talking to on the day that Theresa May announced

0:12.9

she would resign if a Brexit deal passed, if I'm when indeed, and the night that

0:18.4

the comments held those indicative votes. So it was exciting anyway, it was even

0:23.4

more exciting to talk to him. And he's obviously saw that I've followed for a

0:27.9

long time being obsessive about politics. And I've always had a

0:33.6

fascination with people who really enjoy politics as a pursuit. And I've always

had the sense that he was one of those people. And obviously he was a high

0:43.8

flying individual as a youngster. So someone that I've followed for a long time

0:48.1

was fascinated by what he and David Cameron did to the Conservative Party in

0:52.5

modernising it. So he's someone that's you know, I feel like I've been following

0:57.0

for years and he's still so young. And it's it's a brilliant interview because he

1:02.8

has so many really funny stories. And I won't ruin anything. There's some brilliant

1:06.8

stories. And on top of that, there's some really deep proper politics in it

1:11.4

about his own politics, but also about the Conservative Party, the pressures in

1:16.0

the Tory party, what he thinks about politics now, the way forward for Brexit.

1:19.8

So there's a lot of hopeful stuff in there. And what is really incredibly

1:26.5

that he mentions this in the interview, the longest serving chancellor, which for

1:31.5

someone so young really is quite incredible. He was shadowed chancellor at 33.

1:35.4

So he's got a really unique perspective on politics and he's still very active

1:39.9

and still very influential. And you get the sense, I suppose with a lot of the guests,
