Summary

Sonia Kumar

Sonia has been an MP for almost a year and has used her platform to lead the first ever Parliamentary debate on incontinence.

It's a subject very close to Matt's bladder and Sonia tells him how her career as a physiotherapist led her to raising it as an issue and standing for Parliament in the first place.

Plus Sonia explains her position on assisted dying and gives the most compelling reason for visiting Dudley you are ever going to hear.

Hello and welcome to the political party.

0:12.4

Today's guest is Sonia Kumar, the Labour MP for Dudley, elected in last year's general election.

0:18.8

And I saw a clip of Sonia this week, or a couple of weeks ago, raising the issue of incontinence.

0:26.9

Now, this is something that, as you may be aware, affects me personally following my spinal

0:30.9

surgery of a couple of years ago.

0:32.8

And so I was delighted to see this.

0:36.1

And it sort of occurred to me that maybe this was an under-debated thing in Parliament,

0:40.3

but I talked to Sonia about this, and it's been phenomenal seeing the work she's done on it.

0:45.1

She's a former physiotherapist, and that's how she came to be aware of it.

0:50.3

So we'll talk about that in some detail.

0:51.7

And the next political party live is on

0:54.9

Sunday the 6th of July in Sheffield at the Sheffield Playhouse. And my guest will be Andy Burnham.

1:01.7

And I mean, that is just over a year since Labour got elected and one of the most powerful

1:07.7

Labour politicians in the land. It'd be great to talk to him about what Labour's getting right, where it can improve his own ambitions, everything else in between. And then the next one in London is on the 14th of July with Michael Gove at the Duchess Theatre. Thank you for everyone who came to see the Matt Ford Focus Group being recorded, the Radio 4 series.

1:33.1

That was an absolute treat to record. And my new stand-up show, Defying Calamity, which debuts at this summer's Edinburgh Festival is on sale. Now, you can click on the link in the blurb to get

1:39.2

tickets for that. So, on to Sonia. And we do talk about what it's been like in her first year of being an MP.

1:45.7

She is still absolutely full of the joys of it.

1:49.2

And clearly absolutely relishes every part of the job,

1:53.1

including the select committee,

1:55.4

which she does on the business select committee.

1:57.1

And that's interesting because I presumed perhaps she would want to do health, but

2:02.2

there's good reasons why she's on the business select committee. So this is a fantastic chat
