Summary

Oh boy. This is a cracker. The Speaker of the House of Commons is a raconteur without equal and holds court in this riot of an episode. Passionate about democracy, impartiality and fairness, Lindsay Hoyle shows how you can make the Commons function more effectively without sacrificing its unique atmosphere. One episode with Lindsay really isn't enough, you'll be left wanting so many more stories from him. His tale about taking Nancy Pelosi to Coronation Street is one of the best you'll ever hear. Grab a crumpet and wash it down with a pint of Newton and Ridleys, we're going to Lancashire...

Hello and welcome to the Political Party. Not for the first time since this show was created.

0:15.3

What an incredible time to be doing political comedy in a political chat show. Today's

0:19.5

guest is Lindsay Hoyle, speaker of the House of Commons. And nothing can really do justice

0:25.3

to how good this is. He is a very, very funny man, very warm, very likable, very thoughtful.

0:32.0

And we talk about this a little bit. I think near the start, let me speak with the House

0:36.0

of Commons on the whole in my life. I mean, the room for Betty Boothroyd, Michael Martin,

0:39.7

John Berko and now Lindsay Hoyle. Apart from Michael Martin, there have been very big

0:44.6

common-dearing characters who have had to really impose themselves onto the House of Commons

0:50.9

and have seen their role, not just in terms of referee and promises, questions, but in the

0:56.3

functioning of Parliament and strengthening the role of MPs and holding the executive

1:00.2

to account. So they have a real mixed role as speaker of the House of Commons. But what is so

1:05.8

great about it, and I'm a real fan of PM Qs, as you probably know, is that they managed to

1:12.4

dispatch it, I mean, particularly Lindsay Hoyle and Betty Boothroyd in a very funny way.

1:17.4

And they keep it a wit and what they're able to do is make it funny without it being nasty.

1:22.0

And that is such a delicate line that so many others would get wrong. And that really comes

1:28.0

through. But I mean, what you need to just brace yourself for is Lindsay Hoyle is probably

1:33.4

the best storyteller you're ever going to meet. And his anecdotes on here are just majestic.

1:39.3

They are, he possesses timing and delivery that most comedians can only ever dream of.

1:45.8

And he's just a wonderful person to spend time with. But you come away reassured, inspired,

1:54.7

and just thoroughly entertained. I mean, I just felt so energized after me. I mean, we're just

2:00.0

a minute was just like this guy's an absolute firecracker in the right way. And what's great

2:04.8

about me is never at the expense of being serious about politics, about serious about the role
