Summary
This is a story about how quickly politics changes. Gemma Doyle was elected the MP for her hometown in 2010 with a massive majority. Then the 2014 independence referendum happened, upending Scottish politics. A year later Gemma lost her seat to the SNP on a 34% swing. Then Jeremy Corbyn became leader of the Labour Party. This is a refreshingly honest account of what it's like to be a Labour politician of this generation. Gemma worked for Labour in government, became an MP in opposition and saw British politics completely transform. No longer an MP, she is still involved with the party and she explains why, when others left, she decided to stay.

| 0:36.8 | But one of the main threads is people getting in touch with strange or unusual places or mundane |
| 0:44.8 | places that they've seen politicians, Sam gets in touch. He says I used to be in a state agent, |
| 0:51.8 | well I'm sure we can trust every word Sam. He says I have a story for my time there. I had |
| 0:58.1 | Mel Stride, current Tory MP for Central Devon, watched, walked into my office, he stopped to me and said, |
| 1:05.7 | I assume you'll be voting me. I said not a chance. I happen to value the incredible work the NHS does. |
| 1:12.1 | To which he said, my parents both worked for the NHS and I'm a Tory, they vote for me and they trust us. |
| 1:20.2 | I said yeah we've all let our parents down mate at some point but that's a bit fucking extreme. |
| 1:26.1 | Sam I regret to inform you that I believe you crossed the line there. He said the best part of |
| 1:31.4 | all of this a young lady was stood next to me, was stood behind me looking to arrange a viewing of a |
| 1:37.4 | property. That lady was anwydicum. Her only line to me was shame on you. Well Sam I'm afraid I |
| 1:50.7 | think in this instance I agree with that. I'm not sure you should have said to Mel Stride that |
| 1:58.5 | we've all let our parents down at some point but that's a bit fucking extreme. Sam it's a great story. |
| 2:06.6 | I've noticed a bit of a trend when people are getting in touch. The stories are now becoming times they've |
| 2:11.1 | been rude to politicians and not massively keen on that as an undercurrent in these emails but keep |
| 2:18.4 | them coming in. Politicalpartypodcast.gmail.com. Don't forget you can get tickets for the live shows this |
