Summary

The audio equivalent of a fine cigar, Paddy Tipping has one of the most soothing voices in politics. The Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire shares his love of the job and how it compares to his previous life as the MP for Sherwood. He also explains why Nottinghamshire Police received plaudits for their policing of a vigil in the city. Paddy was an anti-war MP and he recalls the pressure he and others felt under at the time of the Iraq vote, caught between his conscience and not wanting to bring down a Labour government. Paddy's warm exterior shouldn't fool you, he's a sharp political brain. Paddy gave Matt his first job in politics and explains why on earth he ever employed him in the first place.

Hello and welcome to the Political Party. Today's guest is Paddy Tipping, the Police and Crime

0:13.8

Commissioner for Nottingham's Chat and the former MP for Sherwood. I should declare an interest

0:18.2

at this point. I worked for Paddy when he was the MP for Sherwood. It was the first job I got

0:21.7

in politics. I'm very, very grateful that he took a punt on me. He explains why towards the

0:26.3

end of this episode, but don't worry. This isn't a self-indulgent catch-up between

0:30.7

two of friends. I was very careful to not make it that. It's a really good political discussion

0:35.7

about the role of police and crime commissioners, about the elements of the role that Paddy is

0:39.2

defining for himself and some of the issues that were going on around the time that he was a

0:43.7

Labour MP. This was, I was working from around the time that the UK was voting for military

0:49.6

action against Iraq and Paddy was anti-war, but also a very loyal Labour MP and that put him and

0:54.9

others in a very difficult position. He talks about those conversations. What went on behind the

0:59.2

scenes? Sherwood itself, for those of you that know the constituency will know, is a mixture of

1:06.8

quite affluent villages, but also coal-filled areas, councillor states in the middle of nowhere

1:11.5

up near Mansfield and Labour lost Sherwood in 2010. Now, it's not quite the same as Ashfield

1:16.8

and Mansfield when we talk about the so-called Red Wall and those places falling to the conservative.

1:21.8

Sherwood had been conservative prior to 1992, but it was a very early warning sign about the

1:26.4

direction of travel. So we talk about that as well. Now, you can email the show political party podcast

1:31.5

at gmail.com, many of you do, and just on that, on what's become a bit of a running theme, do let

1:38.8

us know if you've ever seen a politician on holiday. Andrew's been in touch and sent to me a very

1:44.6

kindie message. I'm 17 and I happily spend hours, how sad does this sound, watching YouTube videos

1:50.2

of 10 minute rule speeches in the commons or watching a 15 minute video on the role and function

1:54.0

of parliamentary select committees? Andrew, that is not sad at all. I'm not sure it's cool either,
