Summary

One of the SNP's biggest stars returns to the show ahead of his bid to stand for Holyrood in 2021. In his time away from elected politics, Angus founded the 'Progress Scotland' thinktank and he shares some of the fascinating research about changing attitudes in Scotland. He also talks about his defeat in 2017, whether he saw it coming and what it's like to be away from Westminster. Angus and Matt look ahead to a potential second referendum and how it may differ from the first. Plus, it wouldn't be a Zoom call without an interruption and Angus is joined by his daughter Saiorse who wanders in halfway through. Plus inevitable whisky chat! Hello and welcome to the political party. Today's guest is Angus Robertson, the former leader

0:12.3

of the SNP in Westminster and someone who's bidding to be the SNP candidate for Edinburgh

0:17.5

Central in next year's Holyrood elections. I've had Angus on the show before, he's one

0:21.8

of the best guests I've had on, so it was a delight to get him back on because there's

0:24.9

so much to talk about. Even in the short time since I last spoke to Angus, it feels as

0:30.1

if though, as he puts it in this interview, the tectonic plates are shifting. Now that

0:34.8

doesn't mean that tectonic plates can't shift back forth and well, I'm not a geologist,

0:39.6

I guess they can move in both directions, some of that. My point is, I suppose, regarding

0:46.6

Scottish independence that you will have seen a consistent lead in favour of Scotland

0:53.1

leaving the union amongst those pulled in Scotland. So it's really interesting to talk

0:58.0

to Angus about this, not just because he's one of the SNP's brightest stars, but also because

1:02.8

he's been doing so much work with the think tank that he set up after he lost in 2017,

1:07.0

and we talk about that and just how much of a surprise that was. Not just for all of

1:12.6

us, but for him as well, but progress Scotland is a think tank that he founded to understand

1:18.1

the undercurrents of these opinions. And what is it that people who voted no to leaving

1:23.7

the UK last time need to hear in order to vote yes or leave or whatever the option is

1:27.8

next time? How do you get people who were anti-independence to become pro-independence? So

1:32.6

it's a fascinating conversation that talks about that and about how his think tank works

1:38.2

and about the sorts of questions they ask and the sorts of things they're trying to find

1:41.9

out. And he breaks down some of those stats by as by age group and that's all fascinating.

1:46.0

But also with Angus he's just such a brilliant talker anyway, so we talk about what he's

1:52.3

been up to since 2017. You know, the guy was one of the stars of the House of Commons

...
