Summary

Dr. Allan Hamilton is a neurosurgeon, a teacher and a horse trainer. Those activities may not seem to have much to do with each other, but Dr. Hamilton has found that horses have a lot to teach us about life and health.

Lead with Your Heart:

His book on the wisdom of horses, Lead with Your Heart, is full of valuable nuggets on horse training that have clear corollaries in everyday life. Here are a few examples: Patience is compassion. Finish better than you started. Never take a day for granted. Tackle small problems before they become big ones.

This Week’s Guest:

Allan J. Hamilton, MD, FACS, was previously chief of neurosurgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. He is currently professor of neurosurgery and clinical professor of radiation oncology. He also holds appointments in psychology and electrical and computer engineering. He is executive director of ASTEC, the Arizona Simulation Technology and Education Center.

His books include The Scalpel and the Soul: Encounters with Surgery, the Supernatural, and the Human Power of Hope; Zen Mind, Zen Horse: The Science and Spirituality of Working with Horses; and Lead with Your Heart: Lessons from a Life with Horses. All of his books have spiritual implications as well as practical applications.
