0:03.9	And the topic of today's newsletter is going to be, should you try to change somebody?
0:09.0	So I've got an email from a guy who recently broke up with his girlfriend and he said for a while they were pretty happy.
0:16.3	They were in love.
0:17.4	Things were great.
0:18.4	It's just that she had several things that he had issues with,
0:22.4	namely, number one, she had a drug problem. And number two, he just didn't like the way she
0:29.2	treated him. And he says, even though they were supposedly in love, he's thinking, well,
0:36.0	if she was in love with me, why didn't she give up drugs and all these other things?
0:40.0	And he says, because at some, he says, at one time I heard you mention if somebody's in love with you, they'll do anything for you.
0:46.7	But the thing that is important to understand about that is like we're talking about a normal, healthy, stable woman woman it's true that women will change their
0:57.0	religion they'll leave their families even leave their kids in some cases and go chase after
1:03.6	or to be with a guy that they want to be with but if somebody's got a drug problem and they're
1:10.2	just a foul nasty person and they
1:12.5	don't treat you the way you want to be treated, you can set and try to enforce healthy
1:16.5	boundaries, but if they continually violate them, you either put up with it or you have to leave
1:22.0	because the strongest negotiating position is being able to walk away and mean it. So it's obvious
1:26.8	this guy cares about her, but he gave her a lot of leeway and he tried to
1:32.4	help her turn things around, but she was unwilling to do it.
1:37.8	This is really important because I see a lot of people do this, whether it's friendships
1:41.6	or family members or their intimate partners.
1:48.9	It doesn't mean you should give up on that person and stop loving them but at the end of the day until especially like when it comes to drug or alcohol problems
