Should we be worried about Gino Smith in 2023 that more this week on the Couch, Warren Sharp?

Oh, so much to get into Warren, but let's start with something that might be counter to what a

lot of people are looking forward to in Seattle. Should we be worried about Gino Smith this year?

Well, I don't know if worried is the right word, but we should have some questions about his

performance from last year, because last season, I was a little bit surprised when I went back and

looked at just how efficient this Seahawks passing attack was. We know that they dumped Russell Wilson,

and we know there were good reasons for them to dump Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson was not

playing very well for this team, and Russell Wilson was struggling, and I think Pete Carroll was fed

up with him. But the reality is that when you look at the Seattle Seahawks passing attack last year,

Russell Wilson averaged more EPA per attempt in his final year in Seattle, which was 2021, then did

Gino Smith last season. If you run down like the laundry list of statistics, Russ in the year that

was so bad got him kicked out of Seattle averaged more yards per attempt, averaged through fewer

interceptions, better to touch down the interception ratio, higher touchdown rate took fewer sacks,

converted third down to the higher rate. The list goes on and on and on. All of these things,

Russell Wilson was better at than was Gino Smith last season, and so Gino did have a great

completion percentage. That was like one thing that obviously Gino did remarkably well. But at the

end of the day, do I think Gino was playing better than Russell Wilson did when he left? I think

the sort of the tape tells you that, but the stats tell you a little bit of a different story.
