I record these so that you and I can begin our days and are weeks in awe

and on fire with a burst of inspiration in particular after so many of us here in North America

are digging out of that last winter storm. Speaking of that storm, despite that raging Midwestern winter storm dumping as much

as a foot of ice and snow in our region, a client of ours moved forward last week with a live

in-person speaking event, with streets completely covered in snow and empty of all traffic.

The leaders of the organization called Balto brought their team together downtown in

St. Louis, Missouri. The goal of the summit was to thank the team for all that they do,

remind them that the best days remained ahead, and provide a clear next step for them to take

on that journey forward. And the fact that the entire city was completely shut down did not deter

these leaders from living into that goal. Although I was candidly shocked that they actually move forward with a live event.

Maybe I should not have been.

The name of this fearless organization derives its name from a fearless dog that raced through a blizzard to save lives.

Let me tell you more about that.

In 1924, the remote Alaskan town of Nome began

experiencing the disastrous effect of dystheria. A similar endemic eight years earlier,

I claimed the lives of almost 50% of the native population is disastrous. As the town doctor and the three nurses became

overwhelmed with the spreading virus, a frantic message was sent to Anchorage for the antitoxin

that would cure these patients. Three hundred thousand units were quickly assembled. They were packed together and they were ready to be sent.

There was one massive problem, though.

It was the dead of winter in 1925.
