Summary
Over the last few weeks, the NWSL has debated flipping its Spring to Fall season calendar and instead aligning itself with other top European leagues and the FIFA international schedule by using the Fall to Spring calendar. Ultimately, the NWSL has put the brakes on making any such decision. At least, for now.
On this episode of Full Time, hosts Jillian Sakovits and Tamerra Griffin were joined by Melanie Anzidei to debate all the angles of what flipping the calendar could mean for the NWSL, its players, teams, fans, stakeholders, stadiums & more. From climate to commercial interests. From wet bulbs to World Cups. When is the right time to make a calendar move? What needs to be figured out before then? And, how does Major League Soccer’s decision to flip to a Fall to Spring calendar in 2027 affect any potential decision for the NWSL?

| 0:00.0 | You know, I'm sure the NW cell is just waiting for 2027 when MLS also makes this change and they can sit there. They can take all the notes they want, kind of with the World Cup for 2031. See how it goes. You go first. And then do it better. And then do it better. And there's a part of me that's sort of like, yeah, women's sports does, like, that is how it should be. You guys go |
| 0:21.6 | first, since you guys got the resources first, you guys got expansion first, you guys got the |
| 0:25.7 | investment first. Please, go ahead and be the guinea pig, basically. |
| 0:36.9 | Hello, everybody. A very warm welcome to full-time. It is presented by Amazon Prime. |
| 0:41.9 | Julian Zackavits, your host here with you today, and we have a hot, hot topic. Two weeks ago, |
| 0:47.3 | the news heated up that the NWSL owners were considering a vote to flip the calendar to align more with Europe's. This all comes on the hot |
| 0:56.0 | heels of the men's side, Major League Soccer, making the decision this past November to, in fact, |
| 1:01.3 | change to the European calendar come 2027. So on today's show, we discuss, will the NWSL follow |
| 1:07.7 | suit and should they? On the pod with me today. To do that, I have Melanie Anzi Day and Tamara Griffin. |
| 1:20.7 | So now to properly dive into this debate, I bring in two people that have been covering it tirelessly, and I have a sense, |
| 1:28.4 | are going to continue to do so. Melanie Anzi-Day, hello, Melanie. |
| 1:32.0 | Hello, thanks for having me. And Tamara Griffin. Hi, Tamara. Greetings. Greetings. |
| 1:38.7 | Okay, so this is fun. Let's dive right into it. Melanie, can you get us all caught up on the timeline? Because it looked like there would be an update of an update this week. But that has since changed thanks to NWSL ownership. |
| 1:54.4 | Yeah. So from the very beginning, well, to start, this has been a year's long debate, right? Like flipping the calendar from the current format to a fall to spring format, which would really be like a late summer to spring format. This has been a conversation that has been going around in the NBSL for a very long time. But the news right now is that around mid-April, ESPN, was the first report that there was potentially a vote happening |
| 2:18.7 | at this Board of Governors meeting that is happening as we speak. |
| 2:25.2 | And this is where owners come together with the League Commissioner and they discuss League business. |
| 2:31.7 | And it was anticipated that there would be a vote to imminently change the |
| 2:36.3 | footprint of the league to this fall to spring format. However, the new news, so let's say this |
| 2:42.8 | was April 16th. So as of April 27th, the news is that this is no longer on the table, |
| 2:48.8 | the vote specifically. But as we've been reporting, as you said, |
| 2:52.1 | this is an ongoing discussion and we keep making our calls. We understand that this will still be |
| 2:56.4 | a discussion, just there is no imminent vote pending. But of course, this has now opened the can |
