My name is Jenna, and this is Smarter News.

Well, hello, everybody. Welcome to Scoop.

0:17.3

It is November 10th, an important day in history, as I was reminded by our live

0:23.3

insiders who are joining us today, that it is the 250th birthday for the Marines. And actually,

0:30.7

while we get started here, and we're going to be talking a lot about what's going on in the

0:33.7

political atmosphere of the United States, we're going to be talking about compromise.

0:38.2

And it mixed in there is a question about political courage, isn't there? Or just courage in general

0:42.8

in so many of our stories, if we strip things away from all of the particulars and the details

0:48.2

and specifics, we get to real big themes. You know, what does it mean to be brave? What does it

1:17.8

just as we're talking about not only what's currently happening in Washington, D.C., but we're

1:22.5

going to mark Veterans Day tomorrow on November 11th. We'll get to that towards the end of the show,

1:26.8

but today we're actually marking the end of the show. But today,

1:27.7

we're actually marking the beginning of the Marine Corps. And it's such a fascinating story because

1:32.4

you may not realize that the Marine Corps was born in 1775. So this is before the Declaration

1:39.5

of Independence, before we're drifting into the year that we're going to celebrate next year,

1:43.4

all about 1776.

1:45.0

1775 was very, very important.

1:47.0

And so in 1775 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Captain Samuel Nicholas set up the first Marine Corps

1:54.2

recruiting headquarters at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, looking for, and I quote, a few good men.
