Today's question comes to us from David and David writes, I was wondering if you could share some advice.

I am considering a career in photography and have applied to several universities.

I want to make connections in the museum and gallery worlds, which is why I think a university would

be a good fit for me. What are your thoughts on getting a photography

degree? Would this help me? Thank you David. David, thank you so much for asking

this question. I want to share it with everybody because this does come to my

attention from time to time and people are curious about it. My initial reaction to this and

I want to kind of explain myself on this is that it's really hard for me to give you a yes or no or yes I think it's a great

idea kind of answer for this because a college degree or pursuing a college degree is a pretty serious

lifelong decision it's a pretty serious financial commitment it's a

serious time commitment and you're gonna have to do some soul

searching and thinking this through talking to other people and deciding if this is

the right thing for you but since you asked I will weigh in on what my

thoughts are what my advice is to this I certainly recommend that if anybody is

considering or has the opportunity to pursue a college degree please do it I think

it's a wonderful opportunity. The questions of this come to

whether it's practical or not, whether photography specifically is something that's important

to major in or not. And these are things, again, you're going to have to figure out for yourself and I can give you some

pros and cons here and just at full disclosure I do have a college degree I have a bachelor's degree

it is not in photography I have a degree in music and I actually stayed for a little while and did some postgraduate coursework until I ultimately decided that that wasn't the right path for me and I moved on.

Later on I ended up teaching at the college level and I taught as an adjunct professor part time for about 10 years and

then I actually quit that to make more time to do this show full time and I don't regret the decision
