Summary

This week, I’m talking to Amber Murphy. Amber shares all the ins and outs of becoming a therapist, including getting a masters in social work, the supervised hours needed to practice (and finding a supervisor), the difference between a psychotherapist and psychiatrist, practicing therapy as an empath, building a private practice, the pay, and finding your specialty.

About Amber Murphy: Amber is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of chronic pain, women’s issues, anxiety, and depression. Amber pursued extensive training at the Pain Psychology Center in Beverly Hills and has spent most of her career treating the intersection of pain and anxiety. Amber uses neuroscientific pain education, mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy and compassion to empower her patients while relying on an interdisciplinary team to fully surround her patients with support and care.

Right now, a lot of us are asking some pretty deep questions about our careers and how we make our money.

0:07.3

Is this the job I really want to be doing? Is there something more me out there?

0:12.9

Should my job be changing the world or can I just get a check and go watch more TV?

0:17.5

I've got these questions too, and we're going to get to the bottom of them together.

I'm your host, Jessica Mernan, and this is Should I Be? A podcast where I'll be asking all the

0:28.5

questions to all the people whose jobs we think we want to figure out if we want them to. We'll get

0:34.6

started right after this break. Before we start this episode, please know that I know

0:43.0

that there's some issues with the sound. I'm recording this in a rental and some neighbor was

0:50.5

doing their lawn for about four hours. So there's lots of leaf blowing noises. There's

0:55.5

lots of lawnmower noises. Couldn't get around it. Try to edit it. Couldn't. It's in there.

The conversation is still great. Don't email me about it. I know. Okay. Enjoy it. My son has a whole

crew of stuffed animals he sleeps with called his stuffies. He drapes his body over

them and snuggles them all night. And a few weeks ago, he left them in my bed. So I helped the stuffies all

night and I understood what all the hype was about. They felt so comforting to my body. I wanted my

1:25.9

own stuffies. And now I have my own version with my new

Buffy Wiggle Pillow. The Buffy Wiggle Pillow is floppy yet also supportive pillow that has

wrap around support from your back to your belly. It's great for sleeping, snuggling during pregnancy

and is really great on your period. When I'm on my period, I usually bring my foam

roller in my bed to drape my legs over something. And now I have a much better solution,

1:49.8

aka not a hard piece of foam in my bed. My Buffy Wiggle Pillow is a much softer solution.

And yes, could I have bought in a body pillow? But they're bulky and take up a lot of space, and that's not something I have a lot of right now.

2:03.1

The wiggle pillow actually ties up into a cute, oversized pretzel knot shape that you can
