Ashely P. and I talk about the difference between a librarian and library specialist, getting your Master's in Library and Information Science (MLIS), building a collection and cataloging, the pay, the different roles/jobs at a library, and learning to assert and protect yourself as a librarian.
About Ashley: Ashley (also known as The Library Bae) resides in Virginia and works as a Youth Services Librarian with the Fairfax County Library System. After falling in love with her local library and its contributions to the community, she obtained her MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) from Valdosta State University and has worked in public libraries for almost 10 years. Ashley enjoys working with youth from birth to teens, talking to and teaching others about youth literacy, STEM and STEAM, and promoting diversity, inclusion and equity in libraries.

0:00.0 | A little trigger warning for this episode, we talk about sexual misconduct and stalking. |
0:08.2 | Right now, a lot of us are asking some pretty deep questions about our careers and how we make |
0:13.1 | our money. Is this the job I really want to be doing? Is there something more me out there? Should my job be |
0:20.6 | changing the world? |
0:21.5 | Or can I just get a check and go watch more TV? |
0:24.3 | I've got these questions too. |
0:26.3 | And we're going to get to the bottom of them together. |
0:29.4 | I'm your host, Jessica Mernan, and this is Should I Be? |
0:32.9 | A podcast where I'll be asking all the questions to all the people whose jobs we think we want |
0:38.3 | to figure out if we want them to. We'll get started right after this break. |
0:46.9 | Question. Have you gotten Buffy's new Wiggle Pillow? Because I want you to. It's so good. |
0:53.8 | It's cozy. It's comforting. The Buffy Wiggle |
0:56.6 | pillow is a floppy, yet also weirdly supportive pillow that has a wrap around support from |
1:02.3 | your back to your belly. Body pillows are great, but they're a little big and bulky and sometimes |
1:08.0 | take up a lot of space when you're not using them. What I love about the |
1:12.0 | winkle pillow is that you can fold it up into a cute little knot. It sort of looks like the Pillsbury |
1:17.0 | crescent rolls that your mom used to make when you were little. Remember those? And because the |
1:21.0 | wiggle pillow is so flexible and bendable, you can really make it work for you. For example, |
1:26.4 | close your eyes for a second. Picture this. |
1:29.0 | So I like folding my wiggle pillow in half, then putting one leg through the bottom and one |
1:35.4 | leg through the middle. And then I wrap my arms around the whole thing. It's so supportive. It feels |
1:42.4 | like my whole body is getting a hug. And I especially love those hugs when I'm on my period or having super fatigued days. And it's also great for the planet. As always, Buffy is doing its thing with sustainability. They use two kinds of recycled plastic flue for the stuffing inside and the cool, Sharpa cover. |
