Summary
Should the early signing period in college football be in late July instead of December? We have thought so ever since the early signing period was implemented. Apparently, Mark Pantoni agrees wholeheartedly. Will the rule be changed?
Also on the Ohio State football front, will Brian Hartline be the main playcaller for the Buckeyes in 2023? It will undoubtedly be a collaborative effort. But will Hartline be the main guy calling the plays? Or will it still mostly be Ryan Day?
Hoop dreams? More like hoop nightmares for Ohio State fans. The Buckeyes lost at Michigan yesterday and are now an embarrassing 1-9 in their last 10 games. But there are likely $20 million reasons why Chris Holtmann is not going anywhere after this season.
Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss those topics and more on the Monday 5ish.

| 0:00.0 | Good morning, Bucknowters. Welcome to the Bucknuts Morning 5. |
| 0:29.9 | Here on Monday, February 6, 2023. I am David Biddle, very happy to join by Steve |
| 0:34.7 | Hellwagon. A lot to get into. I want to start with something that Mark |
| 0:39.4 | Pantone brought up. There was so much good stuff last Wednesday from all the |
| 0:42.4 | coaches. We can talk about a hundred different things, but Mark Pantone brought up |
| 0:46.7 | something that I've always thought they should do. In basketball, Steve, as you |
| 0:51.2 | know, they have the signing period right before practice starts, or right |
| 0:55.2 | after it starts, but before the season. You know, and then you have the late |
| 0:58.8 | signing period. For football, for some reason, when they finally did the early |
| 1:01.9 | signing period, they put it in December. Why not put it in late July, right after, |
| 1:06.7 | or right before camp starts? Pantone said that's what they should do. I'll get |
| 1:11.7 | your thoughts on that. Do you think they should do it? And do you think that |
| 1:14.6 | will be implemented? Well, I think it's a great suggestion. I think it protects |
| 1:19.3 | the athletes who then go into their senior year and may have an injury issue and |
| 1:25.7 | not have a scholarship locked up. You know, I think that that definitely hurts |
| 1:34.0 | those guys that, you know, they didn't get a chance to sign before the season, |
| 1:39.3 | because some top colleges will hold off on signing a guy if he gets hurt during a |
| 1:46.2 | senior year. So to me, I think that it protects the athletes and that would be |
| 1:54.2 | the best thing. I think you could do that maybe with maybe upping the number of |
| 2:00.4 | scholarships from 85 to 90 might be good, because we're seeing a lot of pushback |
| 2:06.2 | now at the high school level that, you know, kids are not getting the |
| 2:12.7 | opportunities, perhaps as many opportunities as high school signees coming out |
