Welcome, everybody to soccer 101.

My name is Taylor Rockwell, and on this week's episode, we're going to be doing a lot more talking with hands than normal because we're discussing different types of shots.

And it gets very nuanced very quickly, or at least that's what I'm anticipating as we attempt to differentiate and describe all the different types of shots.

Graham Ruffin, are you ready and excited to get very deep into minute differences? Oh, I'm always ready for that, Taylor Rockwell. I've been practicing my robonas. Have you been practicing yours? Can you do one without falling over? Always. Always. That's how I wake up every morning. It's a 10 Ramona morning. Well, it's just like, I'm just pitching like everyone else in their morning jog and you're just repeatedly along the street.

Just Robonas, Robonas.

Like, running Robona's.

How else am I going to make that Brazil team finally?

I am excited for this one, Graham, because I think it's born of us having the conversation about what's an overhead kick versus a bicycle kick.

Yeah.

Is there actually a difference?

But when you kind of open it up, there are a lot of different ways of describing a shot. A shot, a strike, a chip, a lob, a volley, an effort, a screamer, a thunderbolt, a tap-in, a banger, a galazzo, a curler, a bender, just to name a few. You have many different ways to

describe them. Why do you think we have so many different words for a shot? Because it's the

beautiful game, isn't it? Like, I know that's a cliche, but there's something in that where

soccer is a sport, where there's just so many different ways to score a goal. So if I think about

other sports, which I try not to do too often, but rugby, a sport I know lots about, you have to cross the line to score a try. And yeah, I guess, like, you can drive over the line or, like, just run it over the line. You can tell that I'm a real rugby expert here. There's not the same variety. Tennis, there's a sport. I should expect tennis to begin with. There's a sport I know more about. I think there's a bit more

variety in tennis than in rugby. But soccer is a sport where almost every goal is at least

a tiny little bit different, right? Whereas with tennis, I mean, yeah, there's a volley, there's

four hands, back hands, overheads.

Like, there are different shots, but it just feels like in soccer, there's so many different terms of terminology

because there's so many different ways to score a goal.

Yeah, I would agree.

But for the purposes of today, we're going to focus in on a few specific terms or ways of describing a goal.
