the rest of our natural lives. And we talk about whatever we want. We do. And we also talk

came from, I don't know, where did it come from? Oh, it came from when we were writing

the book. And I fell down a rabbit hole of discovery when I started to piece together

how many people like to buy like Richard Ramirez's hair and shit. And obviously this is well

known information, but like the John Wayne Gacy paintings, the people like to buy clowns

painted by John Wayne Gacy and presumably like put them somewhere in their house where

their children sleep. I don't know why. Yeah. Well, we're going to try and figure out why

in this week's Shorthand. What is it that possesses us to collect things? To spend almost

every waking minute obsessing over and meticulously curating a store of anything from stamps to

taxi derby cats. Did you ever collect things? Did you know what? I tried. And that is one

of the most contrite things I will ever tell you about myself is that I tried to do a lot

of things that other people did. And then I never did them. Which like, is that a weird

thing to do? Is that a weird thing to admit? No, I think the way I feel about collecting

things is kind of the same way I feel about diary writing. Like it's just not something

I ever managed to do. Like I had a collection of dolls, but that's just like character

dolls from different countries, but that's because my dad would bring me them back.
