Keep sweet. It's a phrase that was made popular by Rulan Jeffs when he was profit of the FLDS.

And it really meant don't have any strong emotions, particularly not negative emotions. So,

don't ever be angry. Don't ever be sad. You just always have to be kind and sweet and happy.

No matter what's going on on the inside, this is how we present.

This is Shirley Draper. We heard from her in the last episode. Her great grandfather

helped set up the UEP, the FLDS's Land Trust. She was 16 when Lee Roy Johnson died and Rulan

Jeffs became profit. She says under Rulan, keep sweet was kind of a mantra. It was repeated over

and over again at home and in church. Rulan even put the phrase on the chimney at his house

in big letters. When I lived there last summer, I could see it right outside my window.

We learned how to bottle up our emotions and not express anything. Ever. No anger, no sadness.

Just always this pasted on artificial happiness.

Always joyful, always cheerful. No matter what happens, our profit expects us to keep sweet
