On a chilly rain-soaked Saturday morning in Toronto's Leslieville neighborhood, patrons were having

beverages in the early morning hours inside a Queen Street East pub.

There were about a dozen people just outside the tavern when a man walked out of the

bar in a fit of rage.

People were shot in a place where they expected to be safe.

You see it on the news, but it's very, very difficult to think that it's ever going to happen to you.

There's broken glass, there's ricochet bullets, and there were shell casings on the road.

Today we continue our special series of Crime Beat, where in each episode, I'm joined by one of my colleagues from the TV documentary series.

Here's Catherine MacDonald with details of what happened on that tragic night in October of 2008 in Shootout at the Duke.

As a historical landmark, the Duke has been part of Leslieville in Toronto since 1870.

The 19th century solid brick building was originally called the Moran House Tavern,

and was a restaurant and pub with an inn on the second floor with rooms to rent.

It's located at the corner of Queen Street and Leslie,

just seconds from the 24-hour street car and has one of the best patios in the city.

The Duke is for everyone, a regular bar where you could go get a burger or a deal on drinks.

And I had gone there socially with friends during, you know,

afternoon karaoke events.

And, yeah, and I knew the owners quite well.
