Hello, it's 1961 and I'm beginning my new job as a

probationary English teacher at Forest Hill Comprehensive School. I'm wearing a green corduroy suit with brown ankle

boots. And it's those boots, those boots with the multi-colored cord laces which somehow anchor that old memory.

They were just that little bit daring for the staff room and gave off just that slight hint

of non-conformity which I hoped might endear me to the rebellious ranks of the lower forth.

But although I can without too much difficulty relate specific pairs of boots and shoes to different phases of my life,

it wasn't until I read a new paper in the

sociological review called the temporal landscape of shoes that I realized the

very special relationship between shoes and

fantastically attributed with the capacity to change us.

Whether we're talking about the seven league boots that propelled Puss up the

ladder or Cinderella's transformative glass slipper or Dorothy's red-clicking heels in the Wizard of Oz
