On Tuesday, November 6, 2001, Kathleen Bagby received a call no mother ever wants to receive.

Her son was dead.

That alone was devastating enough, but what happened next was infinitely more world-shattering.

Worse yet, it was all enabled by a broken legal system that put the needs of a monster

above society's most vulnerable.

This is Monsters.

Shirley Jane Turner was born January 28, 1961 in Wichita, Kansas.

Her parents separated when she was around seven years old and she moved with her mother

to the Canadian island of Newfoundland.

Shirley was an incredibly gifted child when it came to academics where she regularly

scored 99 and 100% on her school tests, but at home she was living in deep poverty.

There was rarely enough food to go around and Shirley and her siblings often went to

school hungry.

Shirley was supposed to be the family's ticket out of their destitution and her grades

would easily set her up for a successful career in whichever specialty she chose.

Initially, that pathway was nursing, but her friends told her that with her grades

she could do better and they encouraged her to become a doctor.

In 1980, she enrolled into an undergraduate degree in chemistry at the Memorial University

of Newfoundland, which is known as MUN.

That would provide her a pathway into medical school, but in 1981, Shirley's studies

were put aside when she decided to marry her long-term boyfriend.

A year later, she gave birth to her first son.
