Summary

In the twenty-second chapter of the book of the prophet Isaiah, we find the prophet’s only criticism of an individual. The man in the prophet’s crosshairs is a certain Shebna, who is described as “master of the palace.” He is a high-ranking authority in the government of the people. This reading forces us to ask a simple and very hard question: How goes it with the power and authority that you have? Do you spend the capital of your authority on projects meant to burnish your reputation or do you spend it to the benefit of others?

criticizes nations and peoples and indeed his own people. But the only time he

0:57.8

singles out an individual for criticism is in chapter 22. And the person in the

prophets crosshairs is a certain chebna. Chebna. He's described as master of the

1:12.9

palace. Now it probably meant something like oh Prime Minister, so the

1:17.5

palace in question is the King's palace. And chebna is a very high official

1:22.4

let's say in the government. So what is it that rouses the

1:27.6

iron of the prophet Isaiah again, chebna? So that he says, listen to this, I will

1:33.0

thrust you from your office and pull you down from your station. Wow. What did

1:39.4

this guy do wrong? Well, we have to look a little bit earlier in the book of

1:43.8

the prophet Isaiah and we find this. Thus says the Lord God of hosts, come, go to

1:51.2

this steward to this chebna who is master of the household and say to him, what

1:57.5

right do you have here? Who are your relatives here that you have cut out a tomb

2:03.2

for yourself, cutting a tomb on the height and carving a habitation for yourself
